About Oahu

Oahu, which is nicknamed "The Gathering Place", truly lives up to its name. From heiaus (ancient Hawaiian temples) and Petroglyphs (native rock carvings) to modern high-rises, Oahu offers many contrasts. Geographically, it is third largest island (about 607 square miles) in the Hawaiian Island chain, and is home to about three-quarters of the state's population. The island is a synthesis of East and West cultures founded upon the values and traditions of the indigenous Hawaiian people.

Like the other islands, islets and shoals that compose the 1,600-mile Hawaiian Island chain, Oahu is thought to have been born of a single "hot spot" in the earth's crust. Over millions of years, the earth's mantle gradually moved to the northwest across this hot spot, which gave rise to each island. Oahu was created about four million years ago, by two now-extinct volcanoes — the remains of which are today known as the Ko'olau and Wai'anae mountain ranges, which run parallel to each other along the length of the island's eastern and western coasts. As with the other Hawaiian Islands, these mountain ranges divide the wetter windward coast from the drier leeward side, resulting in rain clouds, blown in from the ocean, to be predominate on the east side of the island.

Oahu's main residential areas are - Waikiki, Honolulu, Diamond Head, Kailua, Kahala, Hawaii Kai, Pearl Harbor, Aiea, Pearlridge, Kaneohe, Haleiwa, Makaha, Waianae, Nanakuli, Ewa Beach, Aina Haina, Niu Valley, Pearl City, Waipahu, Waipio, Mililani, Wahiawa, Waialua, Lanikai, and Waimanalo. The real estate options on Oahu are diverse and affordable. Condos and townhouses are readily available, as are single-family homes and stunning estates with dramatic views and beach frontage.

The predominate northeast trade winds are the major reason Oahu's climate is pleasant and moderate even during Hawaii's warmer summer months. These same trade winds mean fabulous sailing conditions throughout the year. Average temperatures on Oahu are from 68 degrees F in the winter to 85 degrees F during summer months. Coastal rainfall averages 20 to 25 inches per year. The island features two mountain ranges which separate the moist windward (north/east) coast from the drier leeward (south/west) side. The Koolau Mountains range along the northeast side and to the west are the Waianae Mountains. Both mountain ranges act to inhibit trade wind moisture, resulting in showers occurring most days on the windward side, while on the leeward side showers are fewer and light.

Beaches on Oahu invite more than sunbathing and people watching on pristine white sand in the warmth of Hawaii's sun. With over 112 miles of beaches on Oahu from which to choose, from the North Shore's powerful winter waves of the gentle waters of Waikiki, there is a beach to suit every taste -- sunbathing, snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, or windsurfing. Water temperatures are from 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, regularly drawing both visitors and locals to Oahu's crystal blue waters.

Oahu is famous for several major festivals observed throughout the year, fully illustrating Hawaii's renowned ethnic diversity. The Chinese New Year is celebrated on the lunar New Year, either in late January or early February. The Honolulu Festival, celebrating Hawaii's connection with Japan, is held in March. A week-long "We Are Samoa" celebration is held at the Polynesian Cultural Center during May. Hawaii's most famous celebration is King Kamehameha Day featuring a floral parade held in June. September is the month-long "Aloha Festivals" -- Hawaii's premier cultural showcase, celebrating Hawaiian music, dance and history.
